The Monuments

"Winged Victory"

This is the present cenotaph. It is being restored to its original state and repositioned to another area in the Park and facing to the east.

Winged Victory

"The Newfoundland Airmen’s Memorial"

This monument is dedicated to all Newfoundland airmen who lost their lives while serving with the Allied forces in World War II including the 125th Newfoundland Squadron of the RAF. This monument consists of 7 granite slabs and stands 20 feet at its center.

The Newfoundland Airmen's Memorial

"The Compassion Monument"

The monument evokes the image of the tailfin of an Airbus A340-300 and encases two recovered pieces of steel from the World Trade Center in New York City. The monument stands 12 feet high overall and is constructed mainly of polished black granite with a stylized globe. Its represents the contribution made by the citizens of Gander as they hosted thousands of stranded passengers on September 11, 2001.

The Compassion Monument

"Sgt. Gander, Regimental Mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada"

This monument will consist of a life size statue of a sitting Sgt. Gander together with his standing soldier handler. It will be positioned so that it appears as if the dog and soldier are guarding the "Winged Victory".

Sgt. Gander, Regimental Mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada

"Wall of Black Granite"

A long, low black granite wall (10m long x 1m height) will be set back from one side of the north / south runway and it will be inscribed with plaques commemorating the various air disasters which occurred at Gander.

Gander cenotaph area renamed to "The Gander Heritage Memorial Park"

Sunday, September 16th was a momentous day for us as Mayor Elliott officially renamed the cenotaph area "The Gander Heritage Memorial Park" and unveiled two large billboards depicting the design of the future park.

The billboards

Also, in attendance for the unveiling was MHA Kevin O’Brien who announced his government’s support of the project with $150,000 in funding.

Here is the Committee along with Levi, stand-in for Sgt. Gander. Levi was very popular at the ceremony and graciously posed for a number of photo shots. It is uncanny that Levi is almost an exact likeness in size and image of Sgt. Gander.

Message from the Chairman

Enthusiasm and support for The Gander Heritage Memorial Park is growing rapidly and I feel it’s time to update you on our progress to date.
  • We are meeting on a bi-weekly basis and are moving very quickly with some very important steps.
  • Application has been made to incorporate the Group as "Gander Heritage Memorial Park, Inc".
  • Our Architect has been working on a design for a large Billboard to be erected on the site of the park which will be unveiled on September 16th during ceremonies commemorating The Battle of Britain. Also at that time Mayor Elliott on behalf of The Town of Gander will conduct a ceremony to officially name the area as THE GANDER HERITAGE MEMORIAL PARK. Council has officially sanctioned the name in a public meeting a few weeks ago. The official dedication of the Park and the Winged Victory Monument and other monuments will take place in late summer of 2014. This will be a very formal ceremony and will be attended by many official dignitaries and members of the general public. Keep in touch with our website. Make your plans to attend!
  • We will add a photo of the billboard to our website as soon as it is unveiled in Gander. We will be coordinating this event with the Royal Canadian Legion, 9 Wing Gander and the Town Of Gander.
  • Donations are being received and we want to sincerely thank those people for their generosity and encourage the rest of you to do the same. Charitable donation receipts are being issued for all donations by The Town of Gander – remember this provides a tax credit to you! A donation of $200.00 will provide a tax credit (Federal & Provincial) of $45.00, thus your net cost will be $155.00. Donations exceeding $200.00 will provide a tax credit of approximately 42.3%. Thus the net cost on an extra $100.00 will be $57.70.
  • We will update our web-site periodically so you can see how we are reaching our goal. As well, we have commitments from several local service clubs for contributions – watch our website for these announcements!
  • Our Structural Design Engineers and a sub-committee are completing an Application for Funding for the repair and restoration of the current War Memorial/Cenotaph "Winged Victory" which was originally erected in 1962 and is really in need of this rejuvenation and relocation to a more prominent position in the park. You might be interested in the history of this monument as well as the Airmen’s Memorial, which will be another addition to the Park, by clicking here.
  • We are consulting with two renowned sculptors for the restoration of the current Cenotaph as well as the sculpting of Sgt. Gander and his soldier handler and are negotiating prices with them.
  • Site work at the park has commenced with drainage pipes and underground water hook-up installed "gratefully" by the Town of Gander, whose support, in many ways, is contributing to the progress to date.
  • We are negotiating with several levels of Federal and Provincial Governments and all indicators are very positive for financial assistance. We have received positive indications that a substantial contribution will be forthcoming that will be in the vicinity of 30% of our projected overall cost of $350,000.00. We will keep you updated.

We would really like to have your comments and/or suggestions, whether positive or negative and if you’d rather not post to the web-site, you may contact any Committee Member by e-mail as follows ...

REUNION 2010 LEGACY – Launch Email

This is the launch email sent out by Carol Walsh to all former students who attended the 2010 Reunion in Gander.

It has been almost two years since the Reunion and your Organizing Committee has continued to meet on your behalf to plan and organize the legacy that was presented to you during the reunion weekend.

The Committee, now known as the Gander Schools Reunion Legacy Committee 2010, has committed to the following:
  • Erect a lifesize monument of the Newfoundland Dog, "Gander", together with his soldier handler.
  • Restoration of the present cenotaph, "Winged Victory".
  • Renovate and revitalize the site to a park setting, now known and sanctioned by the Town of Gander as the "Gander Heritage Memorial Park".
  • Relocate the 125th Squadron Wall of Honour previously located at the Gander Aviation Museum to the new Park.
  • Erect a low granite wall of honour to bear commemorations and tributes to Gander’s historical past, i.e. Ferry Command, air disasters, etc.
  • Install paved walkways adopting the direction of our runways.
  • Install lighting, seating, foliage, etc.

The renovation and restoration of the site was determined in consultation with the Royal Canadian Legion who bought our attention to the deteriorating condition of the present monument. In addition, wrought iron fencing was rusting, walkways and sidewalks had weakened and the site was depreciating each year. The site, however, is beautiful with mature evergreens and other shubbery and is situated in the heart of the Town. The Committee decided to extend the scope of our original plan (which was to place the monument of "Sgt. Gander" on the site). We accepted the challenge of providing the Town with a "Park", a place of quiet solitude and peace, commemorating our aviation and wartime history. So was born the "Gander Heritage Memorial Park".

Much work has already been completed. The volunteered services of a landscape architect has provided us with all our landscape planning. The architect has worked with a local firm who has also volunteering their engineering services to plan and oversee the groundwork for the project. Also, a local contractor has offered to provide heavy labour and equipment assistance. We are very fortunate because these services would have been very costly to employ.

The Town of Gander removed, crated and transported to storage the Airmen's Wall of Honour which was previously located at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum. We provided assistance overseeing this move and also stood to the cost of some of the expenses incurred. This move was necessitated by a request from the Museum who felt that the Wall was not within the parameters of museum collections but was more allied with heritage and war memorials.

We have presented our plan to the Town of Gander who are in complete support and are providing assistance wherever possible. Indeed, monies collected in the way of donations to the project is being managed by the Town who will issue tax receipts, etc. In addition, the Royal Canadian Legion have pledged their support and are working with us on this project.

We are now ready to proceed to our second phase. We have recently welcomed a visit from a well known Newfoundland sculptor who surveyed the cenotaph area and discussed in detail the proposed monuments.

We are consulting with a major fundraiser of a similiar project here in Newfoundland and the Committee has visited this site.

This phase will also see accelerated fund raising. We have determined that the total cost of the completed project will be in the vicinity of $350,000. We are pursuing all avenues of funding through a number of federal and provincial grants, local service clubs, and other means at our disposal.

This second phase will include removal of the present angel "Winged Victory" in November of this year and arrange to have it transported to the sculptor for restoration. Ground work to renovate the park area will have been completed to accommodate its return by the spring of 2013.

Our presentation recently made front page of the Gander Beacon who has published a number of items regarding this project. Our Chairman, Wilson Hoffe, has been interviewed by radio and television about the project.

This is a challenging venture but we are pleased with our progress to date. The undertaking will take a couple of years to become reality.

Although many of you are not now residing in Gander, we truly hope that as former residents of Gander and former students of Gander Schools, you will take great pride in this project and hope that it will be a place to visit when you return.

Your support, views, comments and suggestions are welcomed.

"Sergeant Gander" / Gander's Unsung Hero

Courtesy of Artist Anne Mainman & Newfound Friends (U.K.)

It is without doubt that Gander’s greatest fame came from its beginning as being the largest airport in the world in the 1940’s and it’s role during the Second World War. WWII veterans; their children and grandchildren visit the town each year. Their greatest interest lies in this historical airport. Through our streets, being named for great aviators, to the viewing of artifacts and displays at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum or visiting The Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, they seek to find the past told to them by their fathers and grandfathers. We can boast of many heros who were the pioneers of aviation but many stories have yet to be told of the military men and women who were stationed here during WWII.

One of those stories, however, is known around the world. He is the massive war dog, Sergeant Gander, Regimental Mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada who were stationed at Gander in 1941. Sergeant Gander’s story came to light when the Hong Kong Veteran’s Commemorations Association, insisted that his name be included on their Wall of Valour in Ottawa. In 2000 “Gander” was posthumously awarded the English Dickin Medal for Gallantry (equal to the human Victoria Cross). This valiant and brave animal gave his life to save seven of his wounded comrades during the battle of Lye Mun on the island of Hong Kong in 1941.

Sgt. Gander’s story is well publicized and can be accessed throughout the world. Books has been written about this courageous animal who was born at Gander and was a family pet before being adopted by a contingent of the Royal Rifles of Canada.

Philip Doddridge, National President, Hong Kong Veterans' Association wrote during the summer of 2010:

“I speak on behalf of all Hong Kong Veterans and especially us who were members of the Royal Rifles of Canada and were so fortunate to have adopted that magnificent dog, Pal, whom we re-named "Gander". He soon became everyone's pet, following us on manoeuvers, and being present at all important functions.

His final act of bravery has endeared him forever in the hearts of all Hong Hong Veteran and his legend has become the subject of books and magazine stories.

The posthumous award of the Dicken Medal is little reward for his sacrifice in battle when he harassed the enemy, and finally gave his life to save many of his human comrades.

We are grateful for this further recognition of our famous dog, and pleased beyond compare that it should occur in the place of his birth.

His name engraved on the Memorial Wall in Ottawa is testimony to the respect he has earned from all Hong Kong Veterans. We wish you success.”

It is deserving that “Sergeant Gander” now returns to his hometown.

Former students of Gander who regard themselves as the first children of Gander and having grown up in the 40’s and 50’s at the Airport adopt this project with pride as a gift to all future children of Gander.
