Family and friends, Gander residents young and old, fellow Veterans, fellow Legionnaires, along with The Park committee members, attended Rev. Oake's funeral service on Thursday September 20 2018. Committee members attending were Wilson Hoffe, Carol Walsh, Maxine Smith, Pat Brazil, Bill Kelly, Betty Ireland, Clyde and Betty Burt, and Lew Pearce.

Rev. Oake was a veteran of WWII having served with the 166th Royal Newfoundland Field Artillery Regiment overseas in England, Africa and Italy. He was ordained a minister with the United Church of Canada in 1965 and had ministries in Newfoundland and Ontario before semi-retiring in 1987. Born in Beaumont, Newfoundland, he was residing in Gander with his wife, Myrtle, where he was very active in the community. A great Rev. Oake bio was included in the church bulletin which I have included below.

Rev. Oake became the Honourary Patron for The Park in early 2013. He worked tirelessly to see The Park's construction to its conclusion. He met with businesses, individuals, attended various functions, all raising funds for The Park. His most well known fund raising event by far was his tandem parachute jump at age 92 from an airplane at 10,000 feet which raised some $35,000 for The Park. Thank you Rev. Oake Sir, The Park's Committee and The Park's fans will miss you!

There are a number of photos and stories here on this website about Rev. Oake. I had summarized them on my own blog site when I posted about Rev. OakeClicking here will take you directly to my own blog entry about Rev. Oake's passing.'s passing. Some of my blog post is repeated here also.

A fine considerate friendly outgoing gentleman has moved on. As soon as you met him you were his friend. Family and friends have always been very proud of him and his accomplishments and how lucky were we all to have had him and his guidance in our lives for all those oh so many years. Rev. Oake passed away peacefully on Sunday September 16 2018 at the James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander at the wonderful age of 96. And Sir, we all thank you for serving!

As I moved away from Gander in 1986 I did not know or even know of Rev. Oake until he became the Honourary Patron for the Gander Memorial Heritage Park in early 2013. I was the webmaster for The Park's website at that time and met and chatted with him many times after that.

When Rev. Oake came to the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia for the tandem parachute event on Saturday June 21 2014 I attended the event along with a number of Gander people. The Park Chairperson Wilsom Hoffe also came up from Gander for the event where he also tandem jumped to become Rev. Oake's parachuting buddy. Some of the highlights follow.

On Monday September 18 2018 CBC NL News published this news article titled Veteran, reverend, skydiver Wesley Oake dies at 96Clicking here will take you directly to the CBC News website and the article titled "Veteran, reverend, skydiver Wesley Oake dies at 96".

When Rev. Oake came to Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley on Saturday June 21 2014 for his skydiving fund raiser for The Park the only press on site was Colleen Jones from CBC Halifax. She and Rev. Oake hit it off as if they had known each other since who knows when. So on Monday September 18 2018 I tweeted Colleen the CBC NL News article to let her know of his passing. Colleen's response: "I do remember him - and sad to hear of his passing - but my how his legacy lives on. It was such a pleasure to have met him - may I have his spirit & energy." Steve Lawrence, the CBC cameraman that day, saw my tweet to Colleen. Steve's response: "Sorry to hear this. I shot this story with Rev Oake and Colleen. One of my favourite stories to do in my career so far."

Goodbye Reverend Wes

God knew that you were getting tired
And a cure was not to be
He put his arms around you and whispered
Please come home to me
He didn’t like what you were going through
And he wanted to give you eternal rest
He needed your help in his beautiful garden
And he insisted on having the very best
When we looked at you sleeping today
You were peaceful, quiet and serene
There was no pain
And while our hearts ached to have you back
We could not bear the thought of you suffering again
You will always be present in our memories
Of thought, word and deeds
Your soft hands will guide us through
Particularly in times of need
Today we say our last goodbye
You have earned your eternal rest
We know that you will bring new life to God’s garden
Because you are the very best
You were give back to the dust today
Our parting words were placed upon your chest
Until we meet again Dear friend, may God be with you always
Goodbye Dear Comrade Reverend Wes.

Of the service and reception after, Carol Walsh wrote: "There was one emotional moment when Rev.
The Park’s new monument honouring Ferry Command was dedicated on Sunday, September 17, 2017. We are a bit belated in telling the story here on The Park's website but we feel it needs telling as Ferry Command played such a big role in Gander's history. With reference to the year 1946, even though WWII ended in 1945 "Ferry Command continued in operation until it was formally dismantled in 1946 according to our research.". (Gerard)

Ferry Command – 1940-1946

The history of Gander’s role in the WWII effort would not be complete without a tribute to the unsung heroes of Ferry Command.

The Park’s new monument honours those brave civilian and military pilots. During the Battle of the Atlantic ceremony held on September 17, 2017 the monument was dedicated by the Reverend Wesley Oake.

Ferry Command, a collaborative effort of civilians, the Royal Air Force, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and other allies, was an ambitious effort to transport combat aircraft manufactured in Canada and the United States to WWII operational airfields in the United Kingdom, and other theatres of war.

To avoid catastrophic losses incurred by sea transport, the plan was to fly the aircraft across the North Atlantic Ocean. Given that there had been fewer then 100 successful air crossings of the Atlantic Ocean, the transatlantic flights of Ferry Command were an exercise in ingenuity, determination, and immense bravery.

Over the course of the War, almost 3500 civilian and military personnel from 23 allied nations (including 1500 Newfoundlanders) played roles in Ferry Command. Of the 10,000 aircraft designated for trans-Atlantic delivery, an unanticipated 95% arrived safely. A significant number of flights across the North Atlantic departed Gander at night and during the winter months. At least 560 personnel lost their lives in these efforts.

On the evening of November 10, 1940, seven Lockheed Hudson bombers, led by Captain C.T. Bennett, departed Gander to attempt the 2100 mile crossing of the Atlantic to Great Britain. Eleven hours later all seven aircraft landed successfully in Northern Ireland.

We are pleased to announce that during a ceremony at The Park on Sunday, September 18th, 2016, the memorial wall Tragedies of Flight was unveiled by His Excellency Raoul Delcourde, Belgian Ambassador to Canada and dedicated by our Honourary Patron, Reverend Wesley Oake.

Tragedies of Flight is dedicated to those who lost their lives in three aviation disasters that occurred at Gander. Sabena Airlines crashed on approach to Gander in 1946 resulting in 27 fatalities, CSA Czechoslovakia Airlines on take off in 1967 resulting in 37 fatalities, and Arrow Air on take off in 1985 with 256 fatalities.

Sunday, September 18th, 2016, is significant for two reasons. This Sunday is the 70th anniversary of the crash of Sabena Airlines in 1946 and the 76th anniversary of the Battle of Britain in 1940. The third Sunday of September is designated as Battle of Britain Sunday ... [1] "The annual commemoration of the Battle of Britain honours the airmen who fought and died during the battle and recognizes those who continue to serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force today. The ceremony, including the parade, takes place on the third Sunday in September. More than one hundred Canadians flew in the Battle of Britain between July and October 1940 and 23 lost their lives; an unknown number also served as groundcrew. Historians have described the Battle, which involved almost 3,000 Allied airmen, as a turning point of the Second World War. The victory, described by Sir Winston Churchill as Britain's "finest hour" halted a planned invasion of Great Britain and gave hope to a demoralized Britain and northern Europe. It was the first battle to be won by air power."
Sunday, September 18th, 2016, will see a new monument unveiled at The Park. The new memorial wall is called the Tragedies of Flight! The wall is in memory of the three Gander crashes - Sabena 1946 (this is the 70th anniversary), the Czechoslovakia CSA crash in 1967 and the Arrow Air Disaster in 1985.

Following the "Battle of Britain" ceremony [Sunday, September 18th, 2016] that starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Anglican Church this Memorial Wall will be dedicated by Rev. Wesley Oake and unveiled by the Belgian Ambassador to Canada. Rev. Oake is the Honourary Patron of The Park and the Belgian Ambassador is in Gander for a number of ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of the Sabena Airlines crash of September 18th 1946.

We apologize for this short notice because we weren’t sure the Wall was going to make it here on time. But the Wall did make it here on time and was installed today [Saturday] and we are very thankful for the participation of the Belgium Ambassador.

They arrived by ship into the Port of Botwood on that same day, some stayed in Botwood and the remainder moved on to Gander by train. Their mission was the defense of Newfoundland by providing security for both strategic airfields at Botwood and Gander.

A similar stone marker was unveiled in Botwood the next day Sunday, August 9. The ceremonies started with the parade of veterans led by the QORC including a drummer and bugler. Dignitaries who spoke represented the Veterans, the Royal Canadian Legion, the QORC, 9 Wing Gander and the Town of Gander. Once the speeches were completed the official unveiling of the commemorative stone marker took place. After the unveiling the bugler and drummer played Last Post followed by 2 minutes of silence and then the bugler and drummer played Reveille. The parade was dismissed after a wreath was laid to remember fallen comrades. Veterans in attendance came from as far away as Victoria BC for this weekend's events and many lingered after the ceremonies to have their photos taken posing with the "Winged Victory". "Sgt. Gander", the QORC's "commemorative stone marker", the "Airmen's Memorial Wall" and the "Poppy Memorial Monument" on display at The Park for the afternoon (see below).

BACKGROUND
(from the unveiling ceremonies' program)

Today we are gathered to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada having been garrisoned in Newfoundland on August 10th, 1940.

The Regiment's first assignment was the Defense of Newfoundland. The Queen's Own Rifles battalion on arrival in Botwwod, was split between Botwood and Gander.

The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada is Canada's oldest serving Regiment having formed in Toronto in 1860 making the Regiment Canada's oldest continuously serving Infantry unit. Two of its Regular Arm Battalions were stationed in Victoria, BC during the Cold War, the 2nd Battalion returned from Korea in 1955 and departed to Germany in 1957. The 1st Battalion returned from Nato duty in Germany in 1963 and were at Work Point Barracks, Victoria, BC until re-designated Third Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in 1970.

The Queen's Own Rifles have a long and proud record of service to Canada, fighting its first engagement in 1866 near Ridgeway, Ontario against Fenian Raiders from the United States. The deaths of 9 soldiers at that time heralded sacrifices in campaigns throughout the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The QOR served in the North West Rebellion, Boer War, First and Second World War, Korea, Nato duty, Cyprus and other Peacekeeping Operations including Afghanistan.

Every year there are untold numbers of Veterans and their children and grandchildren touring the country to visit wartime sites to review and research history of how they and their forefathers lived during these times.

These Stone Markers being unveiled today symbolizes the dedication and sacrifices of soldiers of the Regiment in War and Peace. It also reflects the affection, admiration and appreciation of all Rifleman of The Queen's Own for their service to the Regiment and to Canada.

We are extremely pleased with the graphic images covering the Aliant Utility Box on the outskirts of the Park. You will recall that in June 2014 we issued a "Call to Artists" to submit proposals for the painting of the box, but after attempting relentlessly for six months, we were unable to get any artist to commit. We then looked at the approach of having a graphic attached to it and we are so thankful that Greg Seaward offered to draft a graphic design for us. After hundreds of hours, Greg submitted his final concept and the Committee were in awe of how he captured all the aspects of the Park and thus the printing and application began.
In his presentation Greg describes how he interprets the artwork: In terms of symbolism, the front image (above) represents wartime service, featuring a young pilot wearing a traditional sheepskin jacket, leather cap and goggles, as Hudson bombers pass overhead; the Lee-Enfield rifle and Brodie-style helmet represent those killed in action, and these elements are presented against a background of the Union Jack, the flag which Newfoundlanders fought under at the time.

Facing the park (above), the same symbols are presented in their contemporary forms, from the perspective of remembrance: the pilot is replaced by an aging veteran and the aircraft have become CF-18s; the temporary grave marker has given way to the Cross of Sacrifice from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery and the background has become the Canadian flag.

It should be noted that in this interpretation, these are simply symbols of the overall theme of the Heritage Memorial Park, and are in no way intended to represent or exclude any specific people or events. For example, the Lee-Enfield and Brodie helmet may also be associated with the First World War, but less so the Korean Conflict; it simply represents the fallen on the figurative 'field of battle', and not a specific conflict or branch of service. Likewise, I chose the Cross of Sacrifice more because of the permanence of stone, juxtaposed against the makeshift rifle/helmet, rather than, say, a poppy to signify remembrance.

We gratefully thank Greg Seaward for the design, Aliant and the Town of Gander for their donations to make this transition from a utility box to a wonderful enhancement to the Park!

Again our sincere thanks to all our donors ... the Park would not have been possible without your generosity and it belongs to all of you! We recognize some of our most recent donors: Gander Collegiate 50th Anniversary Reunion and the Gander Goodwill Centre for their donations of $1,000 each. This is the Centre's second $1,000 donation.

In these photos are Brianna Blake and Madison Baker of Twillingate. A community competition was held in the schools in this district and these young ladies decided to do their Project about Sgt. Gander. They did a lot of research and interviewed Eileen Elms of Gander and got photos of Eileen and Gander in the early days, which they used in their project. As well they even had a real Newfoundland Dog on hand for the presentation. Well, Brianna and Madison won first place in their class and decided to donate their winnings to the Gander Heritage Memorial Park to go towards the monument of Sgt. Gander. That was certainly a wonderful gesture and we thank them so much. We certainly hope they can be present for the unveiling on July 23rd 2015, and we hope many of you can also attend.

UNVEILING OF SGT. GANDER AND SOLDIER MONUMENTS
AND OFFICIAL OPENING OF
GANDER HERITAGE MEMORIAL PARK

On behalf of the Town of Gander and Gander Heritage Memorial Park, we are very excited to announce that the unveiling of the monuments of Sgt. Gander and the Royal Rifles Soldier and the Official Opening of the park will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015, at 2 p.m.

The Lieutenant Governor, the Town Mayor, Royal Canadian Legionnaires, representatives of the Provincial and Federal Governments, military personnel, clergy as well as other dignitaries will be participating in the ceremonies. We are expecting the attendance of two Prisoner of War veterans who survived the Japanese war camps and regard Sgt. Gander as one of their comrades.

It has been a long time coming to this point but we have been relentless with our dedication to this project. This park would not have been possible without the generosity of all you donors and the gratuitous services of so many, including Dr. Colleen Mercer-Clarke, Reg Hedges of DMG Consulting, Rev. Wesley Oake, local contractors and volunteers.

We are still in need of funding to complete the next phases of the park: the granite wall recognizing Gander's air disasters, lighting, the installation of a fountain and a surveillance system. Donations are still gratefully being accepted so please consider being a part of this wonderful landmark and its commemoration to our war veterans and our town.

Mark your calendar for Thursday, July 23, 2015, 2 p.m. and keep checking back for updates as we finalize the agenda.

We wish to acknowledge a generous donation from Mr. Philip Doddridge, past president of The Hong Kong Veteran's Association.

Mr. Doddridge is regarded as an esteemed friend of the Gander Heritage Memorial Park and, in particular, Sergeant Gander. He was stationed in Gander in 1941 with the Royal Rifles of Canada when "Pal" was adopted as their mascot. He was present when "Sergeant Gander" was posthumously awarded the "Dickin" medal and took part in the ceremony which was held at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa in 2000.

Also, interesting to note that Mr. Doddridge was on duty in the Control Tower at Gander the night [February 21, 1941] that Sir Frederick Banting's fatal flight took off from Gander for England.

From our Chairman Wilson, Honorary Patron Rev. Wesley Oake and the entire Park Committee, we wish you all a MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We are so grateful for all the donations to date and we hope 2015 will bring enough donations to finish the next phases of the Gander Heritage Memorial Park, i.e. Sgt. Gander statues, walkway lighting, the memorial wall to Gander's aviation disasters and finally, the water fountain.

I am sure you all agree from the photos that the Park looks absolutely stunning and the comments from around Gander are tremendous. The finishing touches and the other monuments will certainly add to the beauty and serenity of the area.

Thankfully the weather cooperated and much more work was accomplished this fall than anticipated. Thanks to the Town of Gander employees, our benches were assembled and installed in late November – some photos attached. Aren't they eye-catching?

We are extremely appreciative to them and the other charitable organizations for their continued support of the Park.

To all our contributors – Thank You! This project would never have reached this stage without your caring and generosity. We hope that you are full of pride for your accomplishment. You have given the residents of Gander a gift that is timeless! We hope Gander residents will visit the Park often and for those of you who live away, we hope when you return home you will make a visit to the Park top priority.

If the saying "A picture is worth a thousand words" then Carol's beautiful photos of the new Gander Heritage Memorial Park are worth millions. The Committee is extremely proud of the accomplishments this year and, although there is still more work to be done and more funds to raise, we wish again to recognize some very special people who have gotten us to where we are today.

To all our donors: individuals, businesses, service clubs and Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments: This would not have been possible without your generosity and support. Can you imagine the donations and gratuitous services to date total more than $430,000.00! If you haven't yet donated, we really need more funds to proceed with the next phase in Summer 2015. Remember us when you need those tax deductions!

Our gratuitous services donors and volunteer labourers, especially Bob Janes and Clyde Burt who spent many long hours at the site doing 'hard labour'; and the committee members and their spouses for saving our foliage by watering them morning and night during the hottest, driest July on record.

Rev. Wesley Oake for his bravery and dedication in Parachuting from an aircraft at 10000 ft. to support the Park. He has received pledges in excess of $20,000.00 and is still receiving donations! You may still pledge to Rev. Oake by following the "How to donate" section on this website's Donations page and send a short email to Treasurer Joy Janes rajanes@nf.sympatico.ca advising her your donation is for Rev. Oake.

On November 11th Rev. Oake was honoured with a certificate from the Knights of Columbus which reads in part: "An Expression of Grateful Appreciation for your Act of Service in Defense of Peoples Basic Rights to a life of Freedom and Dignity". Seen here in the photo below presenting the Certificate is Ed Blackmore of the Knights of Columbus, Gander.

We were so very fortunate to have hired Varrick Hillier as Site Foreman. If he was to follow the job description of Site Foreman we would not see so much accomplished nor such beauty. His attention to every detail including doing a lot of the manual labor himself and overcoming many adversities from weather, staffing problems, equipment and material delays, budget overruns, etc. etc. earned him the title of 'Superman'. On November 11th we presented him with a Superman hat to replace his hardhat. We are so very grateful to Varrick for going above and beyond and for following the specifications of the Park Architect Dr. Colleen Mercer-Clarke.

A HUGE Thank You to the Gander Shrine Club for their donation of $6500.00 to purchase four new flag poles. These photos show Eric Murray President of the Gander Shrine Club presenting the cheque to Treasurer Joy Janes and the shiny new flag poles installed at the Park in time for Remembrance Day. This makes a total of $21,500.00 in donations from the Gander Shrine Club. WOW!

Diane Davis shared her beautiful photos of Remembrance Day Ceremonies and it should be noted that a record number of participants attended the ceremonies this year. I am sure this was in part due to recent tragic events in Ottawa and Quebec as well as those in Moncton earlier, however, I also feel many people gathered to see the Park as they had been seeing the progress as they passed by every day. Please take the time to see more of Diane's excellent photos and videos by clicking here to visit her website LAZYDAYSNL!

The focal point and main objective of the Gander Heritage Memorial Park is the Monument to Sgt. Gander. Unfortunately the statues of Sgt. Gander and his soldier/handler could not be completed by this year's Remembrance Day Ceremonies but will be ready and installed early summer of 2015. Committee member Pat Brazil recently visited the Foundry and shared these photos with us. It is easy to see the 'larger-than-life' size of the monuments and also the detail involved in sculpting them. We are so looking forward to seeing the finished sculptures.

The article about Rev. Wesley Oake titled FEARLESS FUNDRAISER was written by Cory Ruf and published in the November 2014 edition of The United Church Observer magazine.

The Park committee members and I also worked with Caley Moore Senior Editor of the magazine's Editorial staff. Our sincere thanks to The Observer for telling Rev. Oake's fundraising story and to Caley for the PDF copy of the article.

Rev. Oake tandem skydived Saturday June 21 2014 at the Atlantic School of Skydiving in Cambridge NS in the Annapolis Valley as a fundraising event for the Gander Heritage Memorial Park project! He is the Patron of the Park, a retired United Church minister and a WW2 veteran ... he and his wife Myrtle reside in Gander.

Pat Kearney, Area Manager of Bell Aliant presents a donation of $500 to Committee members, Maxine Smith and Carol Walsh. The contribution is to assist us in enhancing their utility unit which is located within the park. The objective is to improve the appearance of the outside of the unit with a graphic design that will illustrate Gander’s aviation history making it more attractive while blending in with the rest of the Park. Our sincere thanks to Bell Aliant for their approval of this project and their donation to make it possible.
